About the Symposium

The “International Symposium Pavement Functional Design and Management – PFDM Symposium” serves as a platform to engage the international pavement engineering community towards design and management of functional characteristics of pavements. The first PFDM Symposium took place at the University of Chang’an, Xi’an, China, 24 – 26 October 2019. The second Symposium was held at the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal, 27th to 29nd April 2023.

The third PFDM symposium, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, 2nd to 4th July 2025, aims to offer an unique platform for researchers, policy makers, and industry experts to come together and engage in discussions on functional requirements of pavements. Such requirements include safe skid resistance, texture, adequate surface and subsurface drainage, riding quality, acceptable levels of tire-pavement noise, low rolling resistance, and also other new functionalities provided by cutting edge technologies which are required by new mobility paradigms.

The symposium presents an opportunity to gain insights into pavement technology trends across Europe, celebrate industry achievements, and exchange best practices in pavement design, maintenance, and policy implementation.

PFDM2025 Organizing Team

Chairs

Dr. Kumar Anupam

Section of Pavement Engineering, Delft University of Technology

Dr. Kumar Anupam has a broad background in structural and pavement engineering. A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and the National University of Singapore (Ph.D.), Dr. Anupam joined TU Delft’s Pavement Engineering Section in 2012. His work focuses on tire-pavement interaction and innovative pavement technologies. He has organized several international courses and conferences, contributing to global knowledge exchange in the field.

Role as the PFDM chair:

Oversees the conference, sets the agenda, ensures alignment with objectives, and facilitates key sessions, etc.

Prof. Sandra Erkens

Chair of Pavement Engineering Practice, Delft University of Technology

Prof. Sandra Erkens is a distinguished expert in pavement materials and structures, specializing in asphalt concrete. She holds the Chair of Pavement Engineering Practice at Delft University of Technology and serves as the top specialist in pavement materials at Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Highway Authority. Prof. Erkens has led numerous international collaborations, including roles in the FEHRL executive committee and the InfraQuest Program Team.

Role as the PFDM chair:

Oversees the conference, sets the agenda, ensures objectives align, and facilitates key sessions, etc.

Dr. Xuyean Liu

Associate Professor, Delft University of Technology

Dr. Xuyean Liu is an Associate Professor at TU Delft with expertise in constitutive modeling, material characterization, and sustainable pavement technologies. His research includes multiscale modeling of asphaltic materials, warm/cold asphalt technologies, and advanced pavement monitoring systems. With over 100 publications and significant contributions to international committees, Dr. Liu plays a key role in bridging research and industry practices.

Role as the PFDM co-chair:

Supports the Chair, coordinates session planning, and assists with speaker and attendee engagement.

Mohammadjavad Berangi

Scientific Researcher, PhD Candidate at Delft University of Technology

Mohammadjavad Berangi serves as the Secretariat for PFDM2025, managing the symposium’s organization and communication. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. at TU Delft, his research focuses on developing intelligent frameworks for predicting pavement lifetimes under Dutch conditions.

Role as the PFDM secretary:

Designing PFDM2025 website, Managing documentation, communication, and logistical arrangements,etc.
